Nestled in the heart of Ewen, Michigan, Mother Farmer is more than just a small farm—it's a an example of how regenerative agriculture can transform both the land and the community. Farmers Sara and Andy are dedicated to land stewardship, community, and high quality produce.
Mother Farmer's approach to farming is rooted in the principles of regenerative agriculture, focusing on restoring soil health, increasing biodiversity, and reducing the carbon footprint of farming activities. Of Mother Farmer’s 138 acres, 60 are enrolled in a USDA conservation plan to return the land to its wild roots. Their produce is also certified naturally grown, meaning no synthetic fertilizers, synthetic chemicals, or GMO seeds are used to aide the growing process, and that the farm has been inspected for sustainable farming practices.
Full-time farmer Andy is on his 9th year, previously farming in Chicago and says he's always learning new ways to adjust to the pitfalls of farming in the Upper Peninsula.
The Mother Farmer farm stand happens on Wednesdays from 4-6 PM and provides the rural town of Ewen with fresh produce rich in nutrients and grown with care. The couple also provides their veggie staples to local grocery outlets, ensuring that residents in the southwestern U.P. have access to healthy food, and also participates in a farm-to-school program.
This year, Mother Farmer is excited to offer sustainably raised, free-range turkeys to the community. These turkeys are raised with care, enjoying the freedom to roam in open spaces, which not only benefits their well-being but also contributes to the farm's regenerative practices. The result is a delicious, nutritious option for holiday tables that aligns with the farm's commitment to sustainability.
At Mother Farmer, the mission is clear: to do their part in the food revolution, feeding real food to their community while healing the land it comes from. Their work is a testament to the power of small-scale, regenerative farming in creating a healthier, more sustainable future for all.
Nice! Andy and Sara are doing really good things!
